HERE'S WHAT A LOCAL MUSIC TEACHER WHO CAME WITH HER STUDENTS HAD TO SAY:
For years, I have been looking for a simple and effective way to teach instrumental music and music theory to our students. I have spent many, many hours researching different curriculua and such dry subjects as the Florida state educational music standards. The challenge has always been to meet two very important requirements: 1) a method free of false data, wrong importances and too much significance, AND 2) even more importantly, the EASIEST, shortest runway possible to PLAYING music WITH COMPETENCE and having BIG wins. I have been asked countless numbers of times for a "good piano/guitar/other instrument teacher" (based on the observation that "good" instruction seems to be the key to success) Far too often, I've had parents ask me how they could get their children to practice more or how they could somehow rekindle their child's purpose for a "dropped" instrument.
Perhaps you, yourself, once felt inspired to play an instrument only to find that purpose later blunted by the endless scales and, undoubtedly, the many misunderstoods you might have encountered. The truth is that no one (well maybe there's the odd exception here and there) decides to take up music because they want to learn how to play scales or read music! People reach for instruments, voice lessons, etc. because they have a desire to play and to create music.
Last year I had the wonderful experience of attending The Understanding of Music Seminar presented by Duncan Lorien. To say that I was blown away is an understatement. Not only was I totally rehabilitated as a musician (I studied piano, violin, guitar and voice), but I had huge wins as an educator. It became TOTALLY REAL to me that my dreams of teaching instrumental music, composition/songwriting and a rock band elective (whee!) could be achieved.
This seminar is for ANYONE ad EVERYONE who is interested in music, from "inexperienced novice" to "music college graduate". When I was aat the last seminar, I saw people who had never played, never read music, etc. read and play Bach by the last day of the seminar with two hands! This usually takes YEARS and YEARS to learn what you learn in one weekend at this seminar. — Mona L.

Along with the seminar, attendees receive reference materials AND 100 lessons in either piano or guitar. If you can imagine what years of music lessons would cost or if you've actually paid for them yourself, then perhaps you can imagine how valuable it would be to spend roughly 20 hours over a weekend to learn all the music basics you would ever need to know to play ANY instrument!
Thank you so much. Before this weekned I never thought I'd be able to play the guitar or even successfully learn. I also had SO much false data that FINALLY after years I eventually found somebody who could properly explain correct data and help me clear up any confusions. I am very excited to learn guitar and have decided to learn not only the guitar, but the piano, the bass guitar, the drums and the trumpet by the end of 2010 (You know why? - WHY NOT?) —Andi M.
Wow! This was incredible. Since I was 5 years old I have wanted to understand music theyry & music history and be able to play music. I have never been able to understand anything in all the classes, lessons I have done. After 2 days I have more confidence & certainty & knowledge I have ever gotten in the past 15 years. Amazing. This has been an incredible experience for me. I have my whole life been wanting to play music. I love music, it's the first thing I want to do when I wake up and the last I want to do before going to sleep. Having done this seminar has meant more to me than I can tell. I have handled so many misunderstoods, including all definitions of those misunderstoods. My purpose, one of my big purposes is to write songs, but how can or could I write with not knowing how to play. It felt as if it would almost be too late in my life to spend 6 years of practice to learn how to play the piano professionally but I still planned to for fun. Now I know with the data I've received and misunderstood words cleared up and with the everyday practice I will be able to achieve my musical goal in this lifetime. I feel an enormous thankfulness for what the Understanding of Music Seminar and Duncan Lorien has done in the form of research and spreading his knowledge. There is no better way to get the fundamentals for playing and creating music. For me this was an outstanding way which gave me enough confidence to continue on my own to build a House of Music on these given fundamentals. I learned in one hour all the scales and chords. Unbelievable. Also how to read above and below the staff. Amazing formulas to know how to do everything - designed by Duncan. We should have the Lorien Way rather than the Dorian. Then drills to clear up everything. You could evnr make up songs. — Vicki B.

Coming in to this I had already been very into the arts (music, acting, choir). I am taking guitar lessons now but it seemed like I wasn't getting anywhere. I was getting more into the theory of it more than the plain purpose of doing this. Lately I got the idea that in three to four years I will get everything my teacher was saying is too hard to get into now. Coming in I did not expect THAT much from the seminar. OH MY GOD!!
